More of Jesus

Reading about John the Baptist this morning. He set out to fulfill the purpose God had for him. There came a point where Jesus & His disciples began baptizing people. John 4:26-30 says, John’s disciples came to him & said, “Teacher, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you said was the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going over there instead of coming here to us.” John replied, “God in Heaven appoints each persons work. You yourselves know how plainly I told you that I am not the Messiah. I am here to prepare the way for Him-that is all. The bride will go where the bridegroom is. A bridegrooms friend rejoices with him. I am the bridegroom’s friend, and I am filled with joy at his success. He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

This short snip of scripture says a lot. I see a man knowing his purpose here on earth. He pointed people to Jesus, he spoke truth to them, challenging them to turn from their sins and baptizing them. This should make us think. Do we live a life pointing people to Jesus? Do we know truth? Do we live and speak in a way that challenges people to turn from sin? As Christians our lives should always be pointing people to Jesus. Our lives are testimonies to those around us, someone is always watching. Do they see Jesus?

John the Baptist got it. He understood with each day that passed it must become more about Jesus and less about him. Are we growing to be more like Jesus every day? That’s our goal as Christians, right? Be more & more like Jesus and hopefully, eventually that’s all people will see in us.

This world tells us we need to work more, earn more money and make a name for ourselves. Unfortunately, we can see in so many lives that even fame and money will not fulfill us. Our true fulfillment, our true peace, our true joy will come when we live a life that says, He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

To live a life pointing those around us to Jesus, we must spend time with the one we want to be more like. We’ve got to study His life. Read God’s Word and know the truth. The truth never gets old, read it over and over and with every day God will open your eyes to more and more truth. You will begin to see with spiritual eyes and hear with spiritual ears. You will become more and more like Jesus as your focus is more on Him than anything else. My prayer is that each of us live out the call that God has on our lives just as John the Baptist did.

Praying,

Michelle

  1. This spoke volumes to me as always. Again, funny how God has me in the Book of John for a few weeks now and I listened to this same passage that stood out in the reading of this blog last night. God is an affirming God. As you stated, “If we stay close to Him, he will speak to us.” God is never far away from us. He’s just a page and a listening ear and that’s as close as we can see. Matthew 6:33, is so very relevant in our everyday lives. I love you Holy Father! Keep me, guide me, and continue to build me up to be more of the woman of God you have placed me. Your Holy wisdom is a lamp unto my feet and a true light to my path. Thanks also for Godly friends who are sold out for your kingdom.
